What internet speed do you need for streaming?

How many Mbps do you need for HD, Full HD and 4K? And why is stability more important than top speed? Explained for fibre, cable and DSL.

Published Updated 2 min read

Most internet plans in the Netherlands and Belgium are fast enough for streaming. Yet the picture sometimes stutters. That's more often down to the stability of the connection inside your home than the speed of your plan.

Guidelines by quality

  • HD (720p): around 10 Mbps per screen
  • Full HD (1080p): around 20 Mbps per screen
  • 4K (2160p): 30 Mbps or more per screen

If two people watch at once, or someone else in the house is streaming a film, add the requirements together.

Fibre, cable or DSL?

Fibre is the most stable and ideal for 4K. Cable is more than enough in most areas. With DSL it depends on the distance to the exchange; Full HD usually works fine, 4K not always.

Wi-Fi or Ethernet?

An Ethernet cable gives the most consistent connection. Wi-Fi is convenient, but walls, floors and neighbouring networks weaken the signal. Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi or a mesh system if a cable isn't possible.
